The Children’s Cottage Society is dedicated to preventing harm and neglect to children and building strong families through support services, respite programs and crisis nurseries. The Children’s Cottage Society offers a wide range of programs for parents and children in Calgary, Alberta. Current services include family support through home visitation and respite programs in the community and at two site-based programs: the Crisis Nursery and Brenda House; all of these programs work collaboratively with a strong network of partner agencies to provide resources and meet a variety of family needs, with the over-arching goal of ensuring that children in our community have strong foundations for healthy physical and emotional development.
The Children’s Cottage Society and Daraja Foundation are working together to enrich current programming for families at the Brenda House, in areas of health and nutrition. The partnership is engaged in an initiative to develop a nutrition education program that will benefit parents and children residing at the house. Activities of this initiative include nutrition education and cooking classes that are facilitated with the help of local experts and volunteers. Classes emphasize learning the nutritional value of food and understanding how a parent can prepare healthy, nutritious meals for their family on a limited budget. The nutrition program at Brenda's House will be replicated by volunteers and students in Zanzibar as they developing a nutrition program at PLCI and Mazizini Children's House. The program hopes to share valuable knowledge with families in a safe, interactive and fun manner.
