Chakula Hai | Nutrition Program
Chakula Hai is a Global Bridges initiative embracing the value in nutrition and well-being while learning about food preparation, business and public service. Chakula Hai also offers opportunities for vocational training in the food service industry for students to learn skills in guest services and meal preparation. Students in this club engage through various avenues including college enrollment, apprenticeships in restaurants or hotels, and educational classes.
Members have trained with various local businesses such as Taperia Wine & Tapas Bar, Lukmaan Restaurant and Lost & Found Hostel or have studied at Machui College. Members continue to share knowledge through nutrition classes, food and beverage service apprenticeships and college scholarships for chef training and front office training. Trainees are learning various things - from how to cook and prepare food safely, to serving and interacting with guests.
With the help of volunteers, Chakula Hai members and the Girls Club are now collaborating to create a training manual on nutrition, a cookbook, hand-crafted kitchen items and a student-run food service that provides nutritional education for guests. The dinner service allows us to put into practice what we've learned from partners and promote principles of nutrition and well-being through interactive education. The nutrition manual and classes are being developed by nursing volunteers from World Unite. It will be used to teach trainees as more members join the club and as the club runs as a student-lead business.
