Mazizini Children's House is an orphanage in Zanzibar that cares for 29 children that range from ages 1-18. Daraja has been involved with this orphanage since 2013. Our volunteers have engaged in educational and fun activities with the children, including weekly tutoring, journaling, teaching health classes, hosting art events, beach events, kite festivals, football games, talent shows, restaurant outings and market outings. Daraja Foundation was provided with a room in the building of which our volunteers turned into an environment for learning which they called the library. With the use of this space, the foundation makes contributions towards English tuition weekly, participation in clubs and creative thought, nutrition education and life skills development. ZL4LF students and Daraja Foundation volunteers have also taken on roles as mentors and advocates by supporting personal growth, ideas, talents and preparation for life after the orphanage.
In addition to the food provided to Mazizini already, Daraja Foundation donors decided to add to the nutritional content of the children’s diet as well as support local farmers in Zanzibar by delivering fruits, vegetables and eggs to Mazizini weekly for the last 2 years. Since then, Daraja Foundation volunteers have been working on adapting the current plan to provide additional nutritional education through conducting cooking classes, providing gardening education and potentially growing vegetables on site at Mazizini with assistance from ZL4LF students.
Since our involvement at Mazizini Children's House, Daraja Foundation has particularly engaged in a supporting role for youth after their departure from Mazizini. We aim to keep in contact with each one and provided them with the option to join ZL4LF classes, training programs and clubs. We would like to continue to support them in their lives towards independence, guiding them further through life skills training, employment and potential sponsorship.
